MINT JULEP
(Added October, 2002)

The inimitable novelist Truman Capote, an Alabama native, once observed, "There is nothing better than a Mint Julep to bring relief from the pressures and pains of summertime." Many claim the Mint Julep, the official drink of the Kentucky Derby, is the world's most civilized and refreshing beverage - although many consider it something of an acquired taste.

To make a classic Julep ...

-- Whip up a simple mint syrup by boiling 2 cups of Sugar and 2 cups of water together for five minutes.

-- Cool and place in a covered container with six or eight crushed up sprigs of fresh mint, then refrigerate overnight.

-- Make one Julep at a time by filling a silver Julep cup with crushed ice, adding one tablespoon of the mint syrup and two ounces of Kentucky Bourbon (Early Times is a good bet).

-- Stir rapidly with a spoon to frost the outside of the cup.

-- Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.

-- If your horse loses the race, just fix yourself another Julep!
