Weaver D’s Delicious Fine Foods - Athens, Georgia

“When I opened my restaurant, I called it Weaver D’s Delicious Fine Foods because I am and it is.” That’s how the always engaging Dexter Weaver, AKA Weaver D, begins his thoroughly unique and enjoyable book, “Automatic Y’all, Weaver D’s Guide to the Soul.” And who are we to argue with this former shoeshine boy, evangelist, and presently Athens, Georgia’s resident Professor of Soul Food? Regulars at Dexter’s modest, white cinderblock eatery near the University of Georgia campus have included college students, faculty, football heroes, locals, and world famous rock stars such as REM, the B-52’s, and Widespread Panic. REM even named their 1994 Grammy nominated album, “Automatic for the People,” for the ubiquitous slogan that appears over the entrance to Weaver D’s. But is far more than a cute catch phrase to Weaver --- it’s a way of life!

Weaver D's - Athens, Georgia

The rather wordy mission statement at Weaver D’s is "to provide delicious fine foods at an optimally set price that is pleasing to both the customer and us. Customer service is of utmost importance, as we strive to remain "Automatic for the People,” meaning that for the customers, we will always be ready, quick, and efficient." And Dexter’s mantra extends far beyond the world of down home cooking. He never misses a chance to brighten someone’s day by dishing out his advice on the virtues of hard work, loving your mama, and generally doing the right thing - in business or in your personal life.

“I try to get folk to live fully, in the spirit and in the world,” Dexter preaches. “Brothers and sisters, come out of that coma!”

The morning menu at Weaver D’s consists of savory breakfast favorites such as eggs, sausage, country ham, grits and the like. Lunch and dinner features your choice of fried fish, chicken, BBQ pork, pork chops, meatloaf or steak and gravy coupled with some truly wonderful vegetable sides. The sweet potato and squash casseroles are simply out of this world. And don't miss the homemade three-cheese mac n’cheese and perfectly seasoned green beans. The buttermilk cornbread is moist and the sweet tea is just right.

If you have room left over, put an exclamation point on your feast with some homemade cake, lemon pie, or some apple cobbler. Weaver D souvenirs (t-shirts, caps, etc.) may be purchased before you wobble out the front door. Soul food doesn't get more satisfying than this. As Dexter so aptly puts it: “Release your grip on bad times and your hand (and tummy, I might add) will be open to receive new blessings.”

Weaver D’s Delicious Fine Foods can be found at 1016 E Broad Street in Athens, GA. They are open from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM Monday - Saturday; closed on Sundays - no big surprise there! Give them a ring at 706 353-7797. Catering services and take-out orders are offered. Dexter’s web site is www.automaticyall.com and his new TV program can be seen regionally on Georgia Public Television. His book “Automatic Y’all” is published by Hill Street Press of Athens and is available at bookstores nationwide. Check it out!
