(294 N. Cherokee Road, GA Hwy 11, 30029 - 770 464-2131) In my opinion one of the very
best Southern eateries anywhere; the restaurant is located in a beautiful antebellum-style
home that was built back in 1917; open daily for Lunch and Supper; in business since 1991;
cool lemonade is often served on the porch by real Southern belles wearing hoop skirts;
visitors from more than 150 countries have signed the guest book here; owner Billie Van
Dyke once said When people come in looking for low-fat food, we tell them to go eat
at the hospital; diners pay one price and eat from the buffet until they are fully
satisfied; this place has two rules: No one goes home hungry and everybody has to have at
least two desserts; the fried green tomatoes here are second to none; the late Southern
humorist Lewis Grizzard summed it up best when he stated Id have to give The
Blue Willow Inn my absolute highest mark five bowls of turnip greens.
1 ½ cups of well-shaken buttermilk
2 large eggs
1 ½ cups self-rising all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
3 large green tomatoes, cut into ¼ inch thick slices
2 cups vegetable oil
- In a bowl whisk together buttermilk, eggs, 1 tablespoon
flour, ½ teaspoon salt, and ½ teaspoon pepper. Immerse tomato slices in mixture.
- In a 12-inch heavy skillet, heat oil over moderate heat
until a candy thermometer registers 350 degrees.
- While oil is heating, in a bowl whisk together
remaining flour, ½ teaspoon salt, and ½ teaspoon pepper. Dredge tomato slices, one at a
time, in seasoned flour, shaking off excess, and fry tomatoes in batches of 6 (do not
crowd skillet) until golden brown and crisp on both sides.
Transfer tomato slices to paper towels to drain and
sprinkle with salt to taste. Serves four to six.

here are cooked over oak and hickory in a brick oven. One caution: The water and iced tea

Mary Mac's Tea Room - Atlanta [Photo]

(224 Ponce de Leon Ave NE - 404 876-1800) Mary Macs Tea Room is a relic from an era
forty or so years ago, when Atlanta had a dozen or more tea rooms. It is located in what
is called midtown Atlanta, just steps away from the fabulous Fox Theatre. This team room
was founded by a lady named Mary McKenzie. When she was bought out by Margaret Lupo in
1962, McKenzies cozy eatery had about 75 seats. It now seats over 350 people and
serves around 2,000 meals each day! Lupo passed away in 1998, but she is still worshipped
here. In fact, printed programs from her funeral are made available to the faithful at the
restaurants cashier station. Mary Macs is famous for its delicious Fried
Chicken. They also feature fresh country vegetables, hot baked breads, and old fashioned
puddings for dessert. The cornbread is served up with a cup of pot likker. Daily specials
include the likes of Chicken Pot Pie, Salmon Patties, Beef Tips over Rice, and Fried
Catfish with Hushpuppies. Mary Macs even offers Buttermilk among their list of
beverages. Adding to the relaxing, old-time atmosphere is a elderly gentleman softly
playing pop standards of yesteryear on a piano in the front of the eatery. Another asset
not to be overlooked is a gem of a waitress by the name of Flo. Flo has been employed here
for well over 20 years and she has attracted quite a following during that time. Her smile
and bubbly personality are infectious. If there was a Waitress Hall of Fame, she would be
a first ballot inductee in my book. Flo rules!!! Check 'em out online
