part of the country; Big Bob started cooking smoked meat back in 1925; he passed away in
1972 ... but the joint was taken over by his daughter; they have been at this same
location since 1952; good pork sandwich with a slightly tangy sauce; all five of Big Bob's
kids are now in the BBQ biz; the sauce must course thru their veins! Open 6:30 am to 9:00

damn proud of his product; slow cooked over a blend of hickory and pecan for up to 30
hours to create a nice smoky flavor; the chicken and ribs are also above average; Mama
Dot's tangy BBQ sauce is outstanding; the recipe is a family secret; everything here is
homemade except the sourdough, Texas-style bread served with each entree; the fresh,
crispy cole slaw is superb and the baked beans taste great with a little Mama Dot's sauce
mixed in; BBQ pork and chicken sandwiches are available in two sizes (regular and a
smaller "Brick Bite"); wash it all down with a expertly brewed sweet tea with
lemon, Coke or an ice cold longneck Budweiser; dessert specials change weekly; you may get
lucky and hit them when they're offering Banana Pudding; a shady swing awaits out back

the Real Thing" sign out front is a tongue in cheek poke at the famous Dreamland BBQ
company, which has moved into the Mobile market; the competition hasn't prevented the
Brick Pit from being voted Best BBQ in Mobile for 3 years running; this is indeed
"Serious BBQ" prepared with passion and attention to detail; highly recommended!

in 1907; quickly outgrew 3 locations before settling here in 1915; mirrored and marbled
walls give this place an upscale diner look; offers fresh Gulf seafood, top notch steaks,

Crabmeat Au Gratin is a favorite here; hot lunch plates include Pork Chops with Brown
Gravy and Sugar Cured Ham with Raisin Sauce; plates come with 2 or 3 vegetables like fresh

(Off exit 45 in I-20/59) Rustic building far back in the
woods. Serves great steaks (Cotton Patch Special is a ribeye), fried
chicken, thin onion rings and biscuits that you could eat all day (wish they'd
bring back the watermelon pickles). Candles stuck in wine bottles
provide most of the light, along with fireplaces in the winter. Every surface
(including the ceilings) has been written on by visitors. Was the site of
controversy several years ago over the wait staff wearing plantation outfits.
About half an hour from Tuscaloosa, so attracts diners from the university
(especially on game weekends).

located on a back street ... but well worth the search; meat is cooked on an open pit out
back with hickory and pecan; Chicken's heirloom sauce is a spicy, mustard based concoction
... similar to popular sauces in South Carolina; look for the sign featuring a cartoony
chicken clutching a comb; yep, Chicken "Comb-er's"; closed Sunday.

white bread, chips, soda or beer; no printed menu; John Bishop Jr. has called the setting
an "indoor picnic"; this place has become world famous with newer locations in
Mobile and Birmingham; ESPN crews eat here while in town covering Alabama football games;
not cheap; slab of ribs goes for about $15; the meat is so tender, Bishop says you can
"take your dentures out and eat my ribs"; sauce has a secret ingredient; some
think it is pot likker from cooking greens; others say its moonshine; only Big John knows
for sure; lunch and dinner Monday - Saturday; closed Sunday; highly recommended.

serves breakfast only; good country ham is served up with a coffee laced

Ezell's Fish Camp - Lavaca

the Tombigbee River; drive through the middle of a cotton field to a rustic cabin with
rocking chairs on the porch; the original building is around 200 years old; quaint setting
with weathered out buildings and moss-covered trees nearby; they have served fried catfish
here for about 50 years; a favorite stopping point for the late Rock n' Roll Hall of Famer
Carl Perkins; unusual items on menu include fried dill pickles and frog legs; most of the
picnic style seating offers river views; on a nice day you can dine on the outdoor patio
while a stuffed moosehead looms over your shoulder; mounted deer and wild boar also adorn
the walls ... adding to the folksy, hunting camp feel; a shadowbox frame displays
rattlesnake tails as well as claws and tails of various local creatures
not for the
squeamish; delicious fried catfish with perfectly seasoned cornmeal coating comes with a
sweet, soupy cole slaw, fresh cut french fries and corn kernel-laden hushpuppies; a nicely
brewed sweet tea is served in tall glasses; a classic fish camp from the past; highly
recommended.

turkey; this cafe was opened by Mary Hunter in 1935; Ms. Hunter served her home-cooked
Creole specialties to many famous diners including Greta Garbo; closed briefly after
Mary's death, but reopened in 1990; terrific local seafood (try the soft shell crab
po-boy) and a delicious down-home buffet served at lunchtime; Forrest Gump would feel
right at home at this place!
Miss Myra's Pit BBQ - Cahaba Heights (Birmingham)

good potato salad and exceptional peanut butter pie; they offer two distinct types of
sauce for the BBQ; one is a traditional tomato based sauce, the other a peppery white

neighborhood tavern; offers a tasty smoked pork; slogan "Yas Suh! It's cooked in de

cornbread and fried pies are also popular with the regulars; some of the kitchen staff
have been employed here for 35 years or more; this has kept the quality consistent
throughout 4 different owners; religious theme throughout restaurant; open for lunch and

Pete's Famous Hot Dogs - Birmingham

proprietor has been slinging franks since 1948; small restaurant is about the size of a
broom closet; they serve a drink here called a Grapico (call to find out more about it).
